While bed bugs are generally harmless, they are also unique from other common pests in ways that make them almost impossible to treat through traditional pest control methods. Dial One Pest Control is committed to being your most trusted source for bed bugs information in New Orleans. As such, here are some basics about bed bugs to help explain this “epidemic.”
Introduction to the bed bug problem
According to news reports, Americans are facing a bed bug epidemic, causing major problems in major cities across the country. But here in New Orleans, bed bugs are not yet in the news on a regular basis so do we really have anything to worry about?
Bed bugs are definitely a growing problem in most major cities. And they are beginning to show up in greater numbers in New Orleans. Bed bugs are not a new problem, but like other pests they do go in cycles, and in the past fifteen years there has definitely been a resurgence of this pest.
Why are bed bugs spreading so quickly?
One of the big issues with bed bugs is that they can travel easily. This allows them to spread from one location to another easily, and once they are in a new location, to infest the new location with ease. For example, a traveler from New York who stays at a hotel with bed bugs then comes to New Orleans. Without knowing it, they can easily transport bed bugs from one place to another.
Bed bugs are able to live on almost any surface, so if they get on your clothes at a friend’s house, you can carry them back into your own home. Once they have made a home in one room of your house, it is easy for them to travel through the walls into other rooms. Additionally, they can be carried by pets and children, making it very difficult to keep a bed bug problem contained once it has begun.
Why are bed bugs so hard to get rid of?
The way that bed bugs reproduce and their life style make the pests difficult to contain. Consider the following facts:
- Female bed bugs lay anywhere from ten to fifty eggs at a time, and may do this up to ten times while they are alive. That means that a single female bed bug can produce five hundred more before she dies!
- Generally, bed bugs live between six and eighteen months, allowing them to outlive the standard treatment cycle. They can become dormant and go long periods without feeding, making it easy for them to avoid the chemicals used to kill them.
- Females lay their eggs anywhere, often packing the eggs tightly into cracks and spaces between the walls where they are out of the reach of most pest control methods.
- The bugs prefer small spaces and are nocturnal by nature, making it easy to miss them when they first appear. This allows the problem to spread before it is noticed, making it harder to treat.
Treating bed bugs
Bed bugs have reappeared as a pest in the United States, and many pest control companies claim to be able to treat them but are ineffective at doing so. “Do it yourself” products are practically useless, and less disruptive liquid treatments have limited success. In fact, we recommend fumigation as the best way to control the problem.
If you know you have picked up bed bugs while you were traveling, you can drop off your luggage to our fumigation chamber before you bring the bugs home with you. We are only 10 minutes from the airport at Phlox Avenue and Airline Hwy.
